DESSA defines advocacy as the process that involves supporting, enabling and empowering vulnerable persons to access their rights and entitlements in a safe environment based on confidentiality, trust and respect (DESSA Advocacy Position Paper, 2009).  

Our Goal

Promoting and championing the rights of disabled people and families through strong advocacy.

What We Do

  1. Deliver practical self-advocacy training to adults and to DPOs - Disabled Peoples' Organisations. 
  2. Build the capacity of parents of disabled children and young people to effectively speak up and access rights and entitlements on behalf of their children. 
  3. Enable families experiencing disability to establish advocacy and peer support networks.
  4. Build the capacity of parents of adults accessing disability services to understand and influence policy and have a say in their service provision.
